Butternut Squash, Cherries and Flax Seeds Baby Food Puree
Happy Friday Mama’s!!! We made it through another week! Phew! Group sigh and deep breath.
If your week was anything like mine, there probably were some big crocodile tears, unbelievable tantrums, your toddler yelling, kicking and throwing punches in your direction. And that was just from your toddler. You have handled some poopy diapers that boarder on mass explosions, sticky banana hands clinging to the only dress you can still fit into these days and hot chocolate spilled all over your jogging stroller because that seemed like a good idea at the time.
Should we all take another breath?
Motherhood is a rough job.
But it’s Friday, and somehow it all feels like it will be okay. If not, this cocktail will make it all better.
This recipe is here for you – quick, fun and beyond satisfying for both baby and toddler. I put Ellie’s in a reusable pouch and hit the park to get all of her crazies out.
Steamed crisp butternut squash, earthy flax seeds and jazzy red cherries, because who doesn’t like some sweet little cherries in their lives.

When can babies start having flax seed?
Hello Masha,
Usually around 8-9 months depending on your baby. I would start with a small amount first because they can really get the bowls going do there 😉

This says "1 organic Cherries, fresh or frozen" – 1 what? 🙂 Thank you!
That would be 1 cup. Thanks for catching that:) just updated the recipe!

Thanks so much! I stumbled upon your blog from Pinterest and am SO excited to make baby food pouches with your recipes this week. Your combinations were exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you so much for sharing all these awesome recipes; baby number one and now baby number two love them. We tried this recipe today ( BUTTERNUT SQUASH, CHERRIES AND FLAX SEEDS PUREE) and it was a winner for mommy and for baby… ¡Mil mil gracias!
Is my 7 mo too young for flax seed in your opinion? If so what’s another option for some good fiber? Thanks!
I think 7 months is a great starting age for flax seeds. You can use the 1/2 tsp to start off with – which in 25 ounces of baby foods is a very small amount per ounce. Or you can adding some cooked oats or pear into this puree for some extra fiber.
About how many ounces or cups did you do for the butternut squash? Thanks!
I tried this recipe, but the only flax seed we had in the house was flax seed meal. The end result tasted pretty bad and separates, leaving a terrible consistency. Is this probably because I used meal instead of whole flax seeds? Do I need whole flax seeds? Or do you think I could I just use a smaller amount of meal?
I haven’t tried using flax seed meal in this recipe but they might absorb more liquid than the seeds. You can also omit the flax seeds altogether.
Is there any spice or flavor you would recommend adding? Thanks for all of your great recipes. 🙂
Thanks for being here:)
You could add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, fresh chopped basil or mint or a little vanilla bean extract.
