Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to the texture of yogurt when you freeze it?

After thawing, it’s normal for the texture of yogurt to be a little grainy or have some excess liquid. Giving the yogurt a good stir should help return it to a smoother texture. If you still don’t prefer the texture of thawed yogurt, it can be used in many recipes, from smoothies to baked goods.

Can you freeze Greek yogurt?

Yes. Greek yogurt, along with all types of yogurt, will freeze well.

When can you freeze yogurt?

Freezing an unopened and sealed container of yogurt is best, but you can freeze yogurt even if opened. If yogurt has been opened, make sure to store in an airtight container.

How to Thaw Yogurt

In the Fridge

To thaw, place yogurt in the fridge until it defrosts. This will usually take at least 24 hours but it can vary depending on the amount of yogurt being thawed.

In Lukewarm Water

Fill a bowl with some lukewarm (not hot!) water and place the frozen yogurt inside (in a container or a freezer-safe bag). Thawing will usually take 2-3 hours.

On the Stovetop

Place the yogurt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Warm until thawed, usually 5-10 minutes.

Uses for Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yogurt is a perfect mix in for oatmeal, smoothies, drinks, sauces, soups, dips, and baked goods such as muffins and pancakes.

Expert Tips

  • Make sure to leave some room at the top of the container if you freeze yogurt this way, as yogurt is partially a liquid and will expand as it freezes. This way you’ll avoid yogurt leaking out and making a mess in your freezer.
  • Freezing yogurt in small portions is preferable (i.e. in ice cube trays), as this helps it to retain as much of the original taste and texture as possible.
