Baked Seasoned Tofu Finger Food Nuggets
Ingredients
- 1 block extra-firm tofu organic recommended
- 1 tablespoon olive oil extra virgin
- 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon mild chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
Instructions
- To get the tofu crispy, you have to drain any excess water from it. Slice the block of tofu horizontally into 2 or 3 even slabs and place tofu slabs on top of a stack of paper towels, with paper towels between each layer and on top of the top slab of tofu. Place a weight on top of the stack of tofu (books, cast iron skillet, cans, etc) and let the tofu drain for 15-30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, heat oven to 400 degree F and spray a baking sheet.
- Cut the tofu into cubes, strips or triangles and place into a medium bowl.
- Drizzle with olive oil and gently toss to coat. Then sprinkle with the arrowroot powder and the remaining spices and gently toss to coat.
- Place tofu onto baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through baking time.

Made these for my 10 month old baby and it is the first food she has ever choked on. Way too hard to give to a baby in my opinion. They were chewy enough for me to eat. Not impressed with this recipe. I will use these as croutons on a kale Caesar salad but won’t be giving them to my daughter again until she has molars.
I am so sorry to hear baby choked on these tofu nuggets! I would will add in the suggestions that for younger babies you can make these into sticks 2-3″ long with will help with choking, or you can cut them into smaller pieces. I served these to both my babies for finger foods and they never had a problem, but all babies chew foods differently.
I tried making them again today with firm tofu (as opposed to extra firm) and I only baked them for 15 minutes total, and they were much better that way.
What is mild chili powder? I haven’t seen that at the store before. Do I just need to look at it, or are there other names for it?
You are looking for just a plain chili powder – nothing with spice in it. Here is the one I use – chili powder.
Wow, I love this recipe! We sprayed a spritz if Bragg’s liquid aminos and a sprinkle of nutritional yeast.
Yum! Love those additions!
Do.you think these would freeze well for an easy grab and reheat snack?
I’ve never tried freezing tofu before. It’s worth trying with a serving. If you try it, let us know how it turns out.
I am just curious, is the arrowroot powder necessary? I am just wanting to try this today, and was hoping to continue avoiding unnecessary grocery store trips. Thanks in advance!
You could also use corn starch if you have it. Both powders give the tofu a crunchy texture.
Made this today for my 9 month old to introduce him to Soy for the first time, also gave some to my 4.5 year old and my husband. Such a great recipe, they all loved them!
So happy you all loved it:)
