5-Star Sweet Potato Waffles for Babies & Toddlers
Looking for a delicious waffle recipe for your baby, toddler, or kid that you can also enjoy? Then, I’ve got you! These Sweet Potato Waffles are perfect for baby’s first finger foods – easy to grasp, easy to gnaw on, and easy for you to enjoy right along with them!

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made these waffles – 50? 100? 150? Who knows?!
What I do know is that I’ve made them so many times that I have the recipe memorized, which is saying something because, as a mom of two kids, I feel like I can’t remember anything without it being written down on a sticky note stuck to my minivan’s dashboard. Can you feel me or what?
But this recipe has followed both of my kids from babyhood to toddlerhood and now into kidhood. And I’ve enjoyed them every step of the way. To us, they are perfect – fluffly, moist with a bit of crisp on the edges (a must for our waffles), and they are just so flavorful!
We have had them plain, dipped into a yogurt and berry mixture, with butter and a drizzle of maple syrup, smeared with cream cheese and a sprinkle of hemp seeds, or (my personal fave) topped with peaches, agave nectar and some toasted pecans.
Anyway, you serve them, turns out to be a winner, so you do you!

Ingredients

#mymomhack – While I made this recipe with sweet potato puree, you can easily switch this up with whatever puree you have on hand – apple, pear, squash, pumpkin, or peach. If you don’t have anything on hand, you can use homemade or store-bought applesauce.

Waffles for Baby & Toddlers
The picture below is of ‘toddler’ size waffles, which is about 1/4 cup of batter. For baby size, I did two waffles in each section and used about two tablespoons of batter for each. You can also just take a toddler-size waffle and chop it up for your baby.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups flour – all-purpose, white whole wheat or whole wheat
- 1 cup quick oats
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup plain whole fat yogurt
- 3 tbsp melted butter or oil – melted coconut, vegetable or mild olive oil
- 4 ounces sweet potato puree – homemade or store bought
- 2 tbsp brown sugar or maple syrup
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt until combined.
- Whisk in the eggs, milk, yogurt, oil, puree and brown sugar into the flour mixture until all ingredients are combined. Let stand for 10 minutes while you pre-heat your waffle maker.
- If your batter is too thick, add in an additional 1-2 tablespoons of milk.
- Pour in roughly 2 tablespoons batter onto lightly greased waffle maker for baby size waffle or 1/4 cup batter for toddler size waffle. Shut lid and cook based on your waffle makers directions. Lift waffle out with fork, slightly cool. Serve or freeze.

This recipe is amazing! I substituted vanilla yogurt for the regular yogurt (and then did not add the maple syrup), and it tasted great! Will definitely be making again!

For the waffles, you would probably need roughly 1 medium/large sweet potato. Hope that helps.
Hi, I wanna make this for my 10 mo girl. Could we skip the whole wheat flour and can cook only with oats floor (by grinding the oats) ?
Btw- what kind of whole wheat flour u used and what is the main purpose of using this flour?

Yes, you can use oat flour, though you may need to add in a little more liquid to get them to be the right consistency. I usually use the store brand organic whole wheat or white whole wheat flour.
I made these years ago when my first was a baby and we loved them. I tried making them again today and they are always still uncooked on the inside! Do you have any idea why? I’m trying to experiment with different settings and cook times on my waffle iron, but I’m running out of batter. They smell delicious, and I know they should taste delicious, but I’d love to actually be able to eat them!
So sorry these waffles aren’t cooking all the way through this time around. I haven’t changed the recipe, so it is the same one you used before. Not sure how thick your batter was, but I have found if the batter is too thick, the waffles won’t cook all the way through.
I love making this and adding ground beef/venison and cheese.

These have become our go-to waffles! My daughter loves them (she is now 3) and the adults do too!. I make them with sweet potato or pumpkin and I add extra cinnamon 🙂 I usually even leave out the yogurt and sub extra sweet potato/pumpkin to pack it with yummy veggies! I like to make a big batch and freeze some. They are the perfect breakfast or even a yummy snack- I just pop one out of the fridge or freezer and put it in the toaster oven until warm and crispy!

Do you think I could use left over mashed sweet potatoes instead of sweet potato puree? I have left overs and don’t want to waste, they do have milk and butter in them so not sure if it will change the batter.

A staple in my home ever since my boy started eating solids. I’ve made these with sweet potatoes, applesauce, butternut squash and pumpkin! I double the recipe and make plenty for freezer. Pop one out of freezer and straight into toaster in mornings. Lifesaver for a working mom!

I have some of the red pepper, sweet potato, pear purée that I made, but my daughter is being very anti-purée. Do you think I could use this recipe as a base for a more savory waffle? What spice would you add instead of cinnamon?
Great recipe! I accidentally swapped the amounts for yogurt and milk and they still turned out great. My 1 year old went bananas for these and that doesn’t happen often!

In the ingredients list there is no brown sugar, but in the listed method you are adding brown sugar.
Is there a particular waffle maker that you’d recommend for making these baby waffles?
No, I’ve had a couple and they all work great. You just don’t fill the entire waffle mold up when making the mini waffles, just a small amount in the middle of each waffle mold will do it.
Can you cook this batter as a pancake??? I do not have a waffle maker:(
I haven’t tried it but I bet if you add a little more liquid to the batter it will work just fine for pancakes. If you try it out, let us know how it works.

Sounds yum. Do you think I could skip out the sugar totally? Or would you recommending subbing in fruit puree or something else?
I tried it without any sugar and they were very bland. But I love the idea of using a fruit puree in the sugars place. You could also try some smashed banana or applesauce.

fYI just made these dairy free using one 400ml can of coconut cream (not lite!) to replace the yoghurt and milk. Then just oil instead of butter. Delicious!

Hi – these recipes all look wonderful! I’m going to try them for my 1 year old grandson. One question – in the Sweet Potato Waffle, is the 4 oz sweet potato puree volume (measuring cup) or weight (scale)?
I measured it by volume as I had 4 1-oz cubes of baby food puree frozen already.

You could probably make the batter and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Making and then freezing will last you 2-3 months.

I am not exactly sure but I would try canned coconut milk instead of yogurt. It needs a thickener and more fat then just coconut milk. Let me know how it turns out.

I used a simple sweet potato puree that I had leftover from Parker’s puree days. There might be some nutmeg in it, but I’m pretty sure it is just straight sweet potatoes roasted and then pureed with water. I have a sweet potato + curry recipe in my 4+ Month section that you could use minus the curry:)
