You have started solids with your little one, are trying new scrumptious recipes and having so much fun! There still might be more food on your baby then in your baby, but the process is there. You can give yourself a pat on your back because you are being a rock star mom!
And then it happens, your little one gets constipated.
You start to panic a little when you realize that you haven’t seem a poopy diaper in a couple of days and you can’t remember for the life of you when the last one was, mommy brain is still very real indeed. You yell down the hall at your husband asking him if he changed a poopy diaper lately and his response is ‘well…I think so, but I can’t remember when it was. Yestreday or maybe the day before. hmm..no maybe it was last week. Why? Does it matter?’. So you start to panic a little more.
Let me stop you right there from panicking. In almost all cases, constipation is very common when transitioning your little one from milk to solids and they are going to be just fine.
When you start to introduce new food to your baby, their poop is going to change dramatically, especially if they were only on breast milk. So get ready. They could go several days without going number 2, there might be pieces of undigested food in there and it is going to start smelling. You might be used to your little one going poop multiple times a day and then all of sudden they don’t go for several days. This is normal, as long as their poop is wet and squishy.
Signs of Constipation
- Your babies stool is hard and dry.
- Your baby cries when going poo.
- Your baby is unwilling to feed and generally unhappy.
- Your baby’s stomach is hard when you gently press down on it.

Foods That Can Trigger Constipation
- Rice Cereal
- White flour, pasta or bread
Easy Cures for Constipation
- Stop serving the items above and switch to foods with lots of fiber in them.
- Serve easy to digest Avocado and Sweet Potatoes.
- Switch to the ‘P’s – purees of Peaches, Prunes, Pears, Peas and Plums.
- Sprinkle a pinch of ground flax seed to any vegetable or fruit puree.
- Sip on some more water during the day. Aim for 2-4 ounces in the morning and evening. This is in addition to the breast milk, formula or milk you are already giving.
- Sit your little one in a warm bath to help them relax.
- Start doing baby circles with their legs. Place baby on her back and quickly move her legs in a circular direction.
Note – Most doctors will recommend giving your baby prune or pear juice to help with constipation, but since I don’t advice serving juice to your little one until after a year old, I would recommend trying the list above first.
