Light, creamy, and low in sugar – you’d never guess we’re talking about healthy cream cheese frosting! With the perfect amount of sweetness and tangy, you’ll want to use this cream cheese frosting for cupcakes, cakes, tarts, fruit dips, and more. Great for babies, toddlers & kids!

Cream Cheese Frosting
Love cream cheese frosting, but are not crazy about the amount of sugar that’s found in most recipes?
Then, I’ve got you!
This healthy cream cheese frosting is naturally sweetened (no butter or powdered sugar necessary!). Plus, it takes just 4 simple ingredients and whips right up in 5 minutes!
This frosting is very versatile and we use it to ice cupcakes, cakes, spread onto crackers with sprinkles for a quick afternoon snack or to dip fruit into.
Ingredients
- Cream Cheese: you will need a block of plain cream cheese for this recipe. I do not recommend using light, fat-free, or whipped cream cheese as the results will vary.
- Greek Yogurt: plain whole milk Greek or regular-style yogurt is the key to making this frosting nice and soft.
- Sweetener: you can use maple syrup, honey (for kids over 1 year of age), or agave nectar in this recipe.
- Vanilla Extract: brings all the flavors together in this frosting

This was a HIT!!! Cannot say how glad I am to have found this recipe! My kid gobbled down his cake & all the other kiddos at his party loved it too (even one who hated his own, highly sugared, smash cake a few weeks ago). I did want a little fluffier of a consistency to frost my cake, and I had cool whip on hand, so I folded in a few scoops of that, and it was exactly what I needed!
Thank you for sharing this!
Hi Kira! Thanks for sharing your experience and the cool whip trick. Love it! xo, Michele
Hello, I was wondering if it’s easy to spread this frosting on the cake – I’m planning to make a Star Wars themed cake for my 1 year olds cake smash and will need to color the frosting as well as spread it evenly on the cake. Thanks!
It is easy to spread. The Star Wars smash cake sounds epic! xo, Michele
It’s delicious but how do I make it thicker ? Thanks
Hi Liza! Glad you liked it. Try putting it in the fridge to thicken it up. Hope this helps! =) xo, Michele
I used this frosting for my son’s 1st birthday and it turned out great, and he LOVED it! I highly recommend!!
Hi Mandy! Thanks for sharing your results. Hope your son had an awesome birthday! 🎉 xo, Michele
Easy, yummy frosting! Perfect for a first birthday cake.
Could I add banana or raisins for sweet instead of maple syrup? Would that still keep a good consistency?
Hi Deb! I wouldn’t recommend using raisins. You can try banana but it will not be as sweet as maple syrup. You can substitute with agave or honey, too! xo, Michele
I decided to go with maple syrup. Did half of what the recipe asks for, and my baby loved it! I really enjoyed it too. I’ll definitely use this recipe again for her smash cake.
This frosting was so good I was eating it with a spoon! Not that sickening sweet like most.
That’s why we love it too! Thanks for sharing, Lynda! xo, Michele
This had a strong sour flavor that my normally not picky 4 yo soundly rejected and spit out. I thought it was edible, but not good. We used maple syrup, maybe another sweetener would have worked better.
Hi Jaqueline! I make this almost weekly and have never had a sour frosting result. Try using a bit more maple syrup until you achieve your desired sweetness. The store-bought frostings are so overly sweet. I hope this helps and you enjoy this lighter frosting option!
