Beets + Apples with Cloves Baby Food Puree
I am beyond excited to announce that we have an expert in the house. Her name is Sara, and you are going to love her.
I am not even sure how we met [mommy brain never really goes away, does it?]. All I remember is that I found her email, read her bio and just knew that we somehow had to work together. So I emailed stocked her, took her to coffee, annoyed her some more and then finally got her to help with this little project of mine.
But it worked and now she is in.
Sara is one of those people who just glows. She shines from the inside out. She has probably eaten more fruits and veggies before noon them most of us eat all week. Trust me, this could be annoying but since she is beyond nice, caring, smart and willing to be our expert on baby food it makes us love her even more. And she gets brownie points because she gets as excited as I do to talk about baby food and nutrition for the little ones.
She is going to give it to you straight on why you need to be feeding your baby homemade delicious organic baby food.
And watch out, she knows her stuff.
She has been counseling mothers, babies and kids on what to eat for the last eight years and isn’t afraid to tell you what you are doing right and wrong. She comes to the table with ideas that are different then what is the conventional norm on how and what to feed your baby.
But that is a good thing.
She just likes for you to have options. But her main goal is to provide mom’s the best tools to feed their babies the best food possible.
She’s going to be our strawberry. So when you see her talking, know that it is the truth talking, not just me making stuff up or repeating what I read somewhere on the internet. I would like to say that she is the brains of the operation, but she is also the beauty.
Hmm.. I guess that just leaves me picking up around here.
beets are spicy, apples are sweet
cloves are the string that ties them together
Beets + Apples + Cloves
2-3 small organic red beets
4 organic apples [I used golden delicious]
1/4 − 1 cup of water
1/4 tsp cloves
Cut off greens on beets and wash. Place beets in small sauce pan and pour in water until the beets are just covered. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for 25-20 minutes or until tender. Reserve 1 cup of water from pan and let beets drain in small colander.
Meanwhile, wash and then cut the apples off the core. You can peel the apples but I left the peel on and didn’t notice a difference in the puree. Place the chunks of apple in a medium sauce pan with 1/4 cup of water and cloves. Over medium heat, cook for 10 minutes or until tender.
When both the beets and apples are cool, blend both the beets and apples. You can definitely do this at the same time or you can do it separately and add them together later. For the beets, I left the peel on but cut off the hard base. Place in blender and blend on high adding your reserved water until you have a fine puree. For the apples, place the apples and all of the clove water into a blender and blend on high until you have a fine puree. If you are blending them at the same time, place everything in the blender – beets, apples and clove water and blend on high adding the reserved beet water until you have a fine puree. This mixture will be the most beautiful shade of pink you have ever seen. It will make you smile.

How much does this make? I’m looking to bulk up my freezer. I also just bought the Fresh Squeeze Line to make pouches for on the go! Very neat!! Do you have any tips for making a lot of stuff at once?

Hello Amanda,
This would probably make around 25-30 ounces. If you want to bulk up your freezer, you should check out my Mix + Match e-books, it has 10 recipes to make that will make over 200 ounces of food all in under 2 hours!

This is amazing! My 7-month old gobbled it up and even my 3-year old was asking for tastes 🙂 I’ve been wanting to make all the recipes on this site, they’re so interesting and gorgeous looking, but unfortunately I live in Greenland and fresh fruits and veggies can be hard to come by. I’ll be testing out other recipes with frozen produce and hope for the best!
So glad both of your kids liked this recipe! Such a yummy one!
You can totally use frozen produce in almost all of these recipes and many times I use frozen in place of fresh when I can’t find great fresh ingredients. Let me know how it works for you.

If I were to sub allspice for cloves, would you do the same amount? I thought I had cloves. Whoops.
I would do the same amount. Allspice will be great in this recipe! Yum!

Where did you get these wooden spoons? I haven’t been able to find a good one! They’re all to big or too flat.
These are mini serving spoons from Crate&Barrel, but have you seen the wooden spoons from Avanchy (you can find them on amazon)? I haven’t tried them but they look great.
Can you use different apples?
Sure, you can use whichever variety you like best.
