This is one of my favorite cakes, not because of how good it is because truth be told I have had better cakes in my life. And to be honest, this isn’t even a cake, it is a mash-up of bread and a cake. The thing that makes this cake my favorite is that this recipe is for you and your little one to make together.

We both put on our aprons and she stands on her kitchen stool, which she now knows how to pull up to the counter to be able to reach for snacks that she thinks I don’t see her getting, I stand next to her and we measure, pour, giggle and learn together. Sneaking bits and pieces of all the yummy ingredients.

Our first joint baking adventure!

There is a mess on her as she accidentally knocks over the sugar.

There is a mess on the floor when she misses the bowl completely while trying to pour flour into the bowl.

These messes make me smile, unlike many of the messes we have around the house.

This French recipe for the cake is so easy that they only measuring cup you need is a yogurt container. You can add just about anything to it – chocolate, berries, cinnamon and sugar, jam and some cream, nuts, sprinkles. You name it. It will turn out and be a cake you can share together.

Sitting together on the kitchen floor waiting and watching the cake bake, you realize that these baking times together are precious and limited. There is only a short window before she takes control of this recipe and instead of needing me to help her with the measuring and mixing, she will have it all by herself. At first, she will be using me as her assistant and then one day she will make it without me even around. Let’s just hope I have taught her how to make my coffee by then because I will always be there to help her eat it.

Ingredients

  • 2 6-ounces containers of plain whole-milk yogurt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1-2 6-ounce containers sugar (adjust to how sweet you like it)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 6-ounce container organic olive, coconut or vegetable oil
  • 4 6-ounce container all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 and grease a 9-inch round cake pan or loaf pan. I like to use 3 mini loaf pans, put different toppings in each, keep one out and put the other 2 in the freezer. But any pan works well with this cake.
  • In a medium bowl, gently combine yogurt, eggs, sugar, vanilla and oil. Add flour and baking powder and mix everything together but be careful not to over mix. Now is the time to add any other ingredients you wish! 1 to 2 containers of fresh fruit, dark chocolate chunks, nuts, cinnamon and sugar, etc.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a tooth pick comes out clean.
  • Let cool and enjoy together.
